Wisdom Tale

Luck in the Bag

A king and an officer run a palace experiment that shows luck may visit, but it should never replace effort.

A king once asked one of his officers:

👑 Do you believe in luck?

The officer answered:

🎖️ Yes, Your Majesty, but I also believe people should not depend on luck alone.

The king smiled and said:

👑 How can you prove that luck can happen?

The officer came closer and whispered a small plan. The king liked the idea and said:

👑 Very well. Let us try it.

A Bag in the Palace Room

That night, the officer hung a small bag from the ceiling of a quiet palace room. Inside the bag were peas and a few bright precious stones. Only the king and the officer knew the secret.

Later, two men entered the room. It was calm and a little dark.

A Sleeping Man and a Curious Man

The first man lay down in a corner and fell asleep quickly. The second man noticed the hanging bag, took it down, and opened it.

At first, he found peas. He thought:

🧔 They are not a royal meal, but they are enough until morning.

He ate the peas one by one. Then he reached into the bag again and found shiny stones. In the dark, he did not understand their value. He thought they were ordinary stones and tossed them near the sleeping man.

The Meaning of the Experiment

In the morning, the king and the officer entered the room and understood what had happened. The officer looked at the king and said:

🎖️ You see, Your Majesty? Good things may reach someone who did not ask for them, but that does not happen every day.

The king looked at the bag and replied:

👑 Perhaps luck exists, but it is rare. A wise person should not spend life waiting for luck alone.

From that day on, the king told the people around him: Work and try your best. If luck comes after that, it is a lovely gift. If it does not come, your work will still be your real path.

What We Learn

  • Luck may happen sometimes, but it is not a plan for life.
  • Attention and effort are better than waiting for chance.
  • Some things look ordinary in the dark, but become valuable when we look carefully.

After-Reading Discussion

  1. Why did the officer hang the bag in the room?
  2. Why did the curious man not understand the value of the stones?
  3. What is the difference between hoping for luck and depending on it?
