Omar loved the smell of cake when it came out of the oven. One quiet morning, he walked into the kitchen and saw his mother setting out flour, sugar, and a large mixing bowl.
Omar smiled.
👦 Are you making my favorite cake?
His mother laughed softly.
👩 I can make it today, but we need some eggs. Could you go to the little shop and buy them?
Omar was happy to help. He took the money, picked up a small basket, and walked out thinking about the sweet smell of cake.

The Walk Home
On the way to the shop, Omar met his friend Sam. Sam was going to buy a few things for his family too, so the two boys walked together and talked about playing later.
Omar bought the eggs and placed them carefully in his basket.
Sam grinned.
🧒 Your mother is going to make a delicious cake!
Omar smiled back.
👦 If the cake turns out well, I will save you a piece.
They laughed and started home. But Omar was looking at Sam while they talked, and he did not notice a small dip in the path. His foot slipped, and the basket fell from his hand.
Omar was not hurt, but the eggs were broken. He sat on the ground and stared at the cracked shells, feeling his chest grow tight.

An Uneasy Idea
Sam tried to help.
🧒 Do not cry, Omar. Just tell your mother the money fell out of your pocket and you could not find it.
Omar looked up in surprise.
👦 But that is not what happened.
Sam shrugged.
🧒 Maybe she will not be upset if she thinks the money was lost.
Omar stayed quiet for a moment. He was afraid his mother would be disappointed, but a lie felt heavier than the broken basket.
At last he said:
👦 I will tell the truth. I tripped, and the eggs broke. That is what happened.
The Truth at the Door
Omar walked home slowly. His mother opened the door and saw his worried face and the basket in his hand.
Before she could ask, Omar said:
👦 I am sorry, Mom. I bought the eggs, but I tripped on the way home and they broke. I was not watching the path carefully.
His mother looked at his hands and his face. Her first question was:
👩 Are you all right?
Omar nodded. Then his mother put a hand on his shoulder.
👩 I am sorry the eggs broke, but I am glad you told me the truth. Honesty helps us fix a mistake.
Omar breathed out. His heart did not feel heavy anymore.
His mother went with him to the shop, and they bought more eggs. On the way, she said:
👩 This time we will walk slowly and watch the path together.
That evening, the cake came out of the oven. Omar tasted a warm slice and smiled.
👦 It tastes better because I told the truth.
