Why remove EXIF and GPS before sharing a photo?

What EXIF and GPS data can contain

EXIF is a common group of fields written by cameras and phones. It may describe when the photo was taken, the camera or phone model, exposure settings, and image orientation. When location recording is enabled, it may also contain GPS latitude and longitude.

XMP and IPTC can hold information added by photo editors, publishing systems, or newsroom workflows, including author, copyright, caption, keywords, and software details. JPEG comments and PNG text chunks can carry additional descriptions.

Not every photo contains every field. The tool inspects each file first and shows only the removable groups it detects.

How to remove photo metadata without reducing quality

For supported images, the tool rewrites metadata sections without decoding and re-encoding the image payload. This means the compressed image data is preserved instead of being redrawn through a canvas. Color profiles, PNG transparency, and WebP animation data are kept.

Some photos depend on an EXIF orientation value to appear upright. When that value is needed, the cleaner keeps only the minimal orientation record and removes the other supported EXIF details. This avoids turning a portrait photo sideways after cleaning.

Quick clean or Advanced mode?

Use Quick clean when your goal is a simple privacy copy for public sharing. It selects every removable metadata group found in the file.

Use Advanced mode when you have a reason to keep one group. A photographer may want to preserve publishing information in a working copy, while removing location details from a public version. Review the selected groups carefully and keep the untouched original separately.

What metadata removal does not hide

Removing EXIF does not blur a street sign, house number, face, reflection, badge, or computer screen that is visible in the image. It also does not change the file name. Rename the clean copy and inspect the visible picture when those details matter.

Metadata removal is also different from image compression. If a website rejects the photo because it is too large, use the Image Compressor as a separate step after creating and checking the clean copy.

Check the result before sharing

Download the result and open it once. Check orientation, colors, transparency, and animation where relevant. You can use File Metadata Viewer for a basic before-and-after file check, but remember that a simple viewer may not expose every proprietary field.

Keep the original photo in your private archive if capture details, copyright information, or editing history may be useful later. Share the clean copy, not the only copy.
