Frequently Asked Questions
Do my files pass through a server?
No. Files are transferred directly between devices using WebRTC peer-to-peer technology. No file data ever touches our servers.
Do both devices need to be on the same network?
For best performance, yes. WebRTC works best on the same local network (Wi-Fi). It can work across different networks but speeds may be slower.
Is the transfer encrypted?
Yes. WebRTC uses DTLS encryption by default. All data is encrypted in transit between the two devices.
What is the maximum file size?
There is no hard limit, but files larger than 1-2 GB may be slow depending on your browser and device memory. For best results, keep files under 500 MB.
Which browsers are supported?
NearDrop works on all modern browsers that support WebRTC: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, and their mobile versions.
