Hassan was a kind boy who loved his father's farm. He knew the chirp of the small birds, laughed when the ducks splashed in the pond, and liked to imagine stories while he walked.
But Hassan was often dreamy. He might be sent to call the chickens, then stop halfway to watch a cloud. His father would smile and say:
👨🌾 Imagination is lovely, Hassan, but a path still needs careful eyes.
On the morning of the village farm fair, Father invited Hassan to walk with him around the farm. First they saw tiny eggs in the little birds' nest. Then they saw pigeon eggs, and after that the hens' eggs.
Father pointed gently.
👨🌾 Every bird has eggs that suit its size. A hen's egg is larger than a pigeon's egg, and a pigeon's egg is larger than a little bird's egg.
At last they reached the duck pond. There, Father found two large duck eggs, smooth and bright, bigger than usual.
👨🌾 These two may do well in the fair's biggest egg contest.
Hassan's eyes shone. Father placed the eggs in a small basket padded with soft straw.

A Small Errand
Father wrote a note to the fair manager and handed Hassan the basket.
👨🌾 The fair is nearby, but eggs are delicate. Walk slowly, and hold the basket with both hands.
Hassan nodded.
👦 I will carry it as carefully as a small treasure.
He left the farm. At first he walked slowly. Then a bird sang from a branch. A yellow butterfly passed. Hassan began to imagine that the basket was a little boat sailing over a sea of grass.
For one careless moment, his foot bumped a small stone. Hassan did not fall, but the basket tilted. One egg rolled onto the grass and cracked.
Hassan stopped, feeling sorry.
👦 I made a mistake because I was not paying attention. One egg is left, and I must protect it.
He tucked the straw around the remaining egg, held the basket with both hands, and walked step by careful step until he reached the fair.
Explain, Do Not Repeat
The fair manager read Father's note, then looked into the basket.
👨💼 Where is the second egg, Hassan?
Hassan lowered his eyes for a moment, then answered honestly:
👦 It cracked on the way. I looked at a butterfly, stopped watching the path, and the basket tilted.
The manager asked:
👨💼 How did it crack?
Hassan reached toward the last egg as if he might show him. Then he stopped at once, took a breath, and put his hand back.
👦 No. I should not explain with the real egg. Repeating a mistake will not help me learn from it.
He took a small ball of straw, placed it on the table, and gently tilted the empty side of the basket to show how the first egg had rolled out.
The manager smiled.
👨💼 Well done, Hassan. Honesty matters, care matters, and you were wise not to repeat the mistake just to prove it.

The manager entered the remaining egg in the fair. It might not win the prize alone, but everyone agreed it was a fine big egg.
When Hassan returned to the farm, he told Father the whole story. He did not hide the cracked egg, and he did not make excuses.
Father rested a hand on his shoulder.
👨🌾 Today you lost an egg, but you brought home a lesson larger than any egg.
After that day, whenever Hassan carried something delicate, he let his imagination rest a little and let his attention lead the way.
