Password Protect PDF

Encrypt a PDF with a password and choose whether readers may print, copy, edit, rearrange pages, fill forms, or add comments. Everything runs privately in your browser.

Strong protection, clear choices

Your PDF and passwords stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded by this tool.

  • Require a password before the PDF can be opened.
  • Use a separate owner password for permission settings.
  • Download an AES-256 encrypted PDF in seconds.

Choose a PDF to protect

Drop one PDF here, or choose a file up to 50 MB.

What the protection does

The file is encrypted with AES-256. Anyone who does not know the opening or owner password cannot normally open it. Permission choices add compatible-reader restrictions.

Limits and compatibility

One PDF up to 50 MB. Already encrypted PDFs and digitally signed PDFs are not changed. Protecting a signed file would invalidate its signature.

How to password protect a PDF

  1. Choose one PDF from your device and enter an optional opening password.
  2. Choose printing and editing permissions, then safely store the separate owner password.
  3. Select “Protect PDF” and download the encrypted copy.

PDF protection FAQ

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF, passwords, encryption, and download stay inside your browser on your device.

Can I use an Arabic password?

Yes. Arabic and other Unicode passwords are supported. Use at least 8 characters for an opening password.

Can every PDF app enforce printing and copying restrictions?

No. These permissions are respected by many standard PDF readers, but some software may ignore them. The opening password is stronger because it is enforced by encryption.

Can you recover a forgotten password?

No. Passwords never leave your device and are not stored. Save both passwords securely before leaving the page.
